Why Mutual Aid?
“Never make art less than you can.” -Lorraine O’Grady
To make art, everyone needs resources. Resources include access to space, stability, support, health insurance, and opportunities to participate in educational experiences that help us grow. If you are new to mutual aid, we recommend the book Mutual Aid written by Dean Spade. In this book Spade outlines three key elements of mutual aid:
“Mutual aid projects work to meet survival needs and build shared understanding about why people do not have what they need.”
“Mutual Aid project mobilize people, expand solidarity, and build movements.”
“Mutual aid projects are participatory, solving problems through sharing and collective action rather than waiting for saviors.”
We believe in mutual aid because we believe that we are our best thing and we can invest in in us.
We are what best enables our most creative bodies.
